QUICKLINKS

Prayer Shawl Ministry

We meet once a month ( 2nd Thursday of each month) to create prayer shawls. These shawls may be given for any occasion, such as marriage, birth of a child, welcome to the family and other milestones as well as to those in need of comfort. In addition to being wrapped in a beautiful shawl, the recipients will most surely be wrapped in God's love as prayerful thoughts are woven into each stitch.

The next meeting of the St. Bernard Parish Prayer Shawl Ministry will be on Thursday, February 9th, from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. in the Church Hall.  We invite all those who enjoy knitting and/or crocheting to consider joining our Prayer Shawl Ministry.  Instructions for the shawls will be provided, but please bring yarn, knitting needles (size 10 to 11), or a crochet hook, size M or N.

For more information, please call Kathy Mullin @ 860-872-8828, or Mary Smith @ 860-872-2611.  (If there is no school in Vernon or a delay due to the weather, we will not have the meeting.)

P.S.  No experience in knitting or crocheting is necessary.  We will teach you.

To request a prayer shawl, please contact Kathy or Mary at the numbers listed above.

 Shawl Instructions

 Materials

Knitting needles size 10-13 ( We usually use 11.)
Crochet hook M or N

 Suggested Yarn

 LionBrand Homespun

Amount of Yarn Needed

Knitting: 3 skeins, 6 oz. each or 185 yards for 54 or 57 stitches
Crocheting: 4 skeins. 6 oz. each or 185 yards for 60 stitches

Knitting Directions

Cast on stitches in multiples of three – 54, 57, or 60.
First row: k3, p3 to end.
Second row: p3, k3 to end.
When in doubt, always start the next row with the opposite stitch of what you see.  For instance, if the first stitch on the needle is a knit, then start with a purl.  KNIT THE PURLS AND PURL THE KNITS.
Note:  If you cast on 57 stitches or 63 stitches, you will always start with a knit.

Before you begin your third skein, set aside the yarn you will need for making the fringe for both ends of the shawl.  The length depends on how long you want the fringe - between 3-8 inches.  Then knit until you finish up the yarn to your desired length.  Knit until the piece measures from wrist to wrist, or approx. 58 inches long.  Bind off with a knit row.

Fringe: Divide the lengths of yarn in half and slip knot them to the ends, evenly spaced.

Crochet Directions

Chain 54 stitches or desired width of shawl.
Chain 1, turn, single crochet in each of the stitches to end. Chain 3 and turn.
Double crochet in top of each single crochet.
Repeat this row 2 more times.
Chain 1 and do 1 row of single crochet to end.  Chain 3 and turn.
Do 3 rows of double crochet.  Repeat pattern to end. (1 row single, 3 rows double)
End with 1 row of single crochet.  Finish with fringe.

Notes of Interest:

The Prayer Shawl Ministry met on Thursday, January 12th, in the Church Hall.  Many beautiful shawls of different colors, patterns, and yarns were created and offered for donation.   We have shawls and lap robes available which have been blessed by Fr. Dennis or Deacon Mike.   In addition, we have some white shawls set aside for new brides from our parish.

Last year we received a beautiful cedar chest as a gift from the Women's Guild in memory of Elaine Johnston.  She was a member of the Women's Guild for many years, and she had always loved prayer shawls.  Elaine had hoped to start a ministry at our church but was unable to fulfill that dream due to illness.  We keep our bridal shawls and other available shawls in the chest which is stored in the rectory living room.  We are most grateful for this very special gift

We encourage you to join us at any time for friendship and time to work together on projects we enjoy so much.  New members are always welcome.
